How Often Does Google Now Answer With AI Instead of Links? The Real Numbers
There is no single "percentage of searches answered by AI", because the credible studies count different things. Per query, independent tracking put Google AI Overviews on about 16% of searches by late 2025 (15.69% in November, Semrush), after a mid-year peak near 25%. Per person, 58% of US users met at least one AI summary across a single month of searching (Pew). And when an AI Overview appears, the top page's clickthrough rate falls about a third (34.5%, Ahrefs). A minority of searches, but a majority of searchers, which is why being named inside the answer now matters as much as ranking under it.
The short version
- Count queries or people, and you get different numbers. About one in six searches show an AI Overview; 58% of people meet one across a month, because everyone runs dozens of searches.
- Reach moved a lot in one year. AI Overview share climbed from 6.49% in January 2025 to a 24.61% July peak, then settled at 15.69% in November, so always cite the month.
- The mix is shifting toward money. AI answers began on informational queries and are now appearing more on commercial and "who provides X" searches closest to a sale.
- The onward click thins out. Ahrefs measured a 34.5% lower clickthrough rate for the top page when an AI Overview is present, though the exact size is contested.
- The direction is settled, the exact figure is not. Across every credible measure, AI answers went from rare to common on Google inside about eighteen months.
If you want one number to quote, here it is: by mid-2025, independent tracking put AI Overviews on roughly one in six Google searches, and a separate study of real users found that 58% of people saw at least one AI summary in a single month of searching. The straight answer is that "how often" depends on what you count, so this page lays out each figure, where it comes from, and what it actually measures.
This is a reference post. It is deliberately short on opinion and long on sourced numbers, so you can cite it, check it, and move on. Every figure below links to the study it came from, and we have flagged what each one does and does not tell you.
The short answer, by measure
There is no single "percentage of searches answered by AI", because the credible studies count different things. Three numbers are worth knowing:
The short answer
How often Google answers with AI, by measure
16%
of individual searches carried an AI answer by late 2025 (per query)
58%
of US users met at least one AI summary across a single month (per person)
25%
the mid-year peak reach before Google tuned the feature back
Semrush AI Overviews Study; Pew Research Center, 2025
- Around 16% of tracked queries showed a Google AI Overview by late 2025, after peaking near 25% mid-year, according to Semrush's analysis of more than 10 million keywords (Semrush AI Overviews Study)[2].
- 58% of people ran at least one Google search that produced an AI summary during March 2025, according to the Pew Research Center's study of real browsing data from 900 US adults (Pew Research Center, July 2025)[1].
- Over 10% more usage of Google for the kinds of queries that show AI Overviews, in its biggest markets, according to Google's own figures (Google, May 2025)[3].
The first measures queries. The second measures people. The third measures behaviour. They are not contradictory; they answer different questions.
How often a search carries an AI answer
The most-cited figure for reach is the share of searches that trigger an AI Overview, and the strongest independent read comes from Semrush, which tracked more than 10 million keywords across 2025 alongside clickstream data from Datos.
Their finding: AI Overviews appeared for 6.49% of tracked queries in January 2025, rose to 24.61% in July, then settled back to 15.69% by November (Semrush AI Overviews Study)[2]. In their words, the share grew rapidly early in the year before "settling in at around 16% of all queries."
So when someone asks "how often does Google answer with AI", the defensible per-query answer for 2025 is around one in six searches by late in the year, having ranged as high as roughly one in four at the mid-year peak, with the exact figure moving month to month.
Why the figure is higher per person than per search
The 58% number sounds far larger than 16%, and the gap confuses people, but the two count different units.
Semrush's 16% is the share of queries that carry an AI Overview. Pew's 58% is the share of people who met at least one AI summary across a whole month of searching. An ordinary person runs dozens of searches in a month, so even if only a minority of individual searches show an AI answer, most people will hit one eventually.
Both can be true at once: a minority of searches, but a majority of searchers. For a business owner, the 58% is the figure that captures lived reality. Most of your potential customers now meet an AI answer in an ordinary week.
How the share changed across 2025
The reach figure is not stable, and any citation should carry a date. Semrush's month-by-month read shows a clear arc: a fast climb in the first half of 2025, a mid-year peak, and a partial retreat (Semrush AI Overviews Study)[2].
2025 trajectory
How the share of AI answers changed across the year
6.49%
Early 2025: AI Overviews on a small slice of tracked queries.
24.61%
A fast first-half climb reached the mid-year peak.
15.69%
A partial retreat as Google tuned where the feature appears.
Upward
From a feature that did not exist to one on roughly a sixth of searches inside eighteen months.
- January 2025: 6.49% of tracked queries
- July 2025: 24.61% (the peak)
- November 2025: 15.69%
The dip from the summer peak does not mean AI answers are going away. It reflects Google tuning where the feature appears. The longer-run direction since the 2024 launch is plainly upward, from a feature that did not exist to one on roughly a sixth of searches inside eighteen months.
What kinds of searches trigger an AI answer
Reach is not spread evenly, and the mix has shifted. Early on, AI Overviews appeared mostly for informational questions. That is changing.
Semrush found that 91.3% of AI Overview queries were informational in January 2025, falling to 57.1% by October as commercial and transactional queries gained ground (Semrush AI Overviews Study)[2]. Navigational searches that trigger an AI Overview rose from 0.74% in January to 10.33% in October.
The takeaway for a business: AI answers started on "how does X work" questions and are moving steadily towards "which X should I buy" and "who provides X near me". The commercial searches that sit closest to a sale are exactly the ones now drawing AI answers more often.
What an AI answer does to clicks
Reach matters because of what it does next. The clearest independent evidence comes from Ahrefs, which compared clickthrough rates on the same class of searches with and without an AI Overview.
Which number
Is 25% or 16% the right figure to quote?
Ask
Are you describing single searches, or whether a person met an AI answer at all?
Quote around one in six
Roughly 16% of individual searches by late 2025, dated, is the true per-search figure.
Quote 58%
58% of US users met at least one AI summary across a single month of searching.
Across a sample of 300,000 keywords, Ahrefs found that the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 34.5% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page, against similar informational keywords with no AI Overview (Ahrefs, AI Overviews Reduce Clicks by 34.5%)[4]. In their measurement, the average position-one clickthrough rate on AI Overview keywords fell from 0.073 in March 2024 to 0.026 in March 2025.
One important caveat: Semrush's clickstream analysis found that for the same search terms, people sometimes clicked slightly more once an AI Overview was present, and that the overall zero-click rate for AI Overview keywords drifted down across 2025 (Semrush AI Overviews Study)[2]. The two studies measure click behaviour differently, so treat "AI answers reduce clicks" as well-evidenced but not unanimous. The direction is clear; the exact size is contested.
Beyond AI Overviews: AI Mode and the wider shift
AI Overviews are the summaries at the top of ordinary results. Google has also rolled out AI Mode, a full end-to-end AI search experience, which widens how often a search ends in an AI answer rather than a list of links.
Google's own account is worth quoting carefully, because it is the primary source on its own product but also has an interest in the framing. The company says AI Overviews drove "over 10% increase in usage of Google for the types of queries that show AI Overviews" in its biggest markets, the US and India, and calls it "one of the most successful launches in Search in the past decade" (Google, May 2025)[3].
AI Mode uses what Google calls query fan-out, "breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously" (Google, May 2025)[3]. One typed question becomes many behind the scenes, which is part of why a single AI answer can draw on, and cite, a wider spread of sources than a classic results page.
What these numbers do and do not say
For a reference that gets cited, the caveats matter as much as the figures.
- They are mostly US data. Pew studied US adults; Google's headline usage figure names the US and India. UK-specific reach figures are scarcer, so treat these as the best available proxy, not a measured UK number.
- They are point-in-time. Reach moved from 6.49% to 24.61% to 15.69% inside one year. Always cite the month, not just the year.
- "Queries" and "people" are different. The 16% (queries) and 58% (people) figures are not interchangeable. Quote the one that fits your claim.
- Vendor framing cuts both ways. Google's usage figure is its own. Semrush and Pew are independent of Google. We have leaned on the independent sources for the load-bearing claims and labelled Google's figure as its own statement.
None of this undermines the headline. Across every credible measure, AI answers went from rare to common on Google within roughly eighteen months. The argument is about the exact percentage, not the direction.
A citable summary
If you need a single, dated, source-backed line to quote:
As of late 2025, Google AI Overviews appeared on roughly one in six tracked searches (15.69% in November 2025, Semrush), having peaked near 25% mid-year, and 58% of US users encountered at least one AI summary during March 2025 (Pew Research Center). The presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 34.5% lower clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page, across 300,000 keywords (Ahrefs).
Frequently asked questions
How often does Google show AI Overviews?
Independent tracking by Semrush put AI Overviews on about 15.69% of tracked queries in November 2025, after a mid-year peak near 24.61% in July. A reasonable shorthand is "around one in six searches" by late 2025, but the figure moves month to month, so always cite a date.
What percentage of searches have an AI answer?
It depends on whether you count searches or searchers. Around one in six individual searches carried an AI Overview by late 2025, after a mid-year peak nearer one in four (Semrush), while 58% of people saw at least one AI summary across a full month (Pew).
Why do some sources say 58% and others say 16%?
They measure different things. 58% is the share of people who met an AI summary over a month; 16% is the share of individual queries that show one. Most people hit an AI answer eventually even when only a minority of single searches show one.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?
Ahrefs found that the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 34.5% lower clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page, across 300,000 keywords. Semrush's clickstream read is more mixed. The reduction is well-evidenced but its exact size is contested.
Are these UK figures?
No. The strongest reach studies are US-based, with Google naming the US and India for its usage figure. Use them as the best available proxy for the UK, and say so when you cite them.
Is the share of AI answers still rising?
The long-run trend since the 2024 launch is clearly upward, but it is not a straight line. Reach peaked mid-2025 and dipped by November as Google tuned where the feature appears. Commercial and transactional queries are now drawing AI answers more often than they used to.
Which of my searches are most likely to show an AI answer now?
Increasingly the commercial ones. AI Overviews started on informational "how does X work" queries (91.3% of AIO queries were informational in January 2025), but by October that had fallen to 57.1% as commercial and transactional searches gained ground. The queries closest to someone choosing a provider are exactly the ones now drawing AI answers more often.
Does an AI Overview appearing mean nobody clicks through at all?
No. It means fewer people click, not none. Ahrefs measured a 34.5% lower clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview is present, and Semrush's clickstream read was more mixed, so a share of searchers still click through. The reliable takeaway is that the onward click thins out, not that it disappears.
Is 25% or 16% the right number to quote?
Both are real, at different dates. AI Overview reach peaked near 24.61% in July 2025 and settled at 15.69% by November. "Around one in six by late 2025" is the fair current shorthand; "peaked near one in four mid-year" is the fair peak figure. The single most important habit is to attach the month to whichever you cite.
How does AI Mode differ from AI Overviews in how often Google answers with AI?
AI Overviews are the summaries at the top of an otherwise normal results page; AI Mode is a full end-to-end AI search experience with no classic link list at all. AI Mode widens how often a search ends in an AI answer rather than links, and it uses query fan-out to turn one typed question into many behind the scenes, so a single answer can draw on a wider spread of sources.
Where this leaves your business
The numbers settle one question: AI answers are now a normal part of how people search, not a fringe feature. If most of your customers meet an AI answer in an ordinary week, and the onward click can halve when they do, then being named inside the answer matters as much as ranking below it.
